TYPES OF SINGING STYLES AND GENRES

There is a wide range of singing styles and genres out there. Different cultures around the world have their own scales and modes, therefore a lot of different types of music have emerged. If you want to take up singing lessons then here is a list of some most common genres and styles of music that you can choose from. 

  1. Pop

Pop is a fun and romantic kind of music. It is not that sentimental but it dances with rhythm. Pop singers generally have an entertaining personality. Performing pop doesn’t mean that you just have to sing the song, it is a whole performance, which includes both singing and dancing. Pop singers are advised to control their vibrato and are known for experimenting with different kind of sounds and tunes. Madonna, Prince and Whitney Houston are one of the greatest pop singers. So, if you Madonna is your inspiration then you should definitely choose pop for your singing lessons

  1. Rock 

Rock is a grandchild of the blues. It is rougher and edgier, which are the defining features of the genre. Today there is a wide range of rock music out there. Rock singers have a vocal flair, they experiment with different sounds like growling or vocal fry at the end of song sections. But it is important to experiment in moderation, because overdoing it may ruin the tune. 

  1. Opera 

It is the most formal genre of singing. It is sung with uncontrolled vibrato and total emotional release. Opera singers need to have that kind of emotional freedom to be able to sing like that.

  1. Jazz

Jazz has its roots in blues and ragtime. It originated in the African-American communities. Jazz is a slightly more sophisticated version of blues. It is characterized by its clear speech level. If you want to become a good jazz singer then it is advised to be aware with its history and listen to the old jazz legends to know more about the genre. Jazz singers tend to experiment with different pitch slides and scatting.  

  1. Hip-Hop 

This genre emerged in the 1970’s. Hip-Hop is a highly rhythmic music. This rhythmic singing is often paired with rapping and beat-boxing. It has gained popularity over the years, in fact it has influence on other genres as well such as pop, country etc. Hip-Hop singers need to have a good control over rhythm. Wordplay and nasality are defining feature of the genre. Singers create their own signature styles using these features of Hip-Hop music.
